How Can I Be Saved?
The most important question you will ever answer concerns where you will spend eternity.
God Wants You to Know
The Bible gives a clear answer about salvation. You do not have to wonder whether you can be saved or how you can have eternal life. God's Word shows us our need, what Jesus Christ has done for us, and how we can receive His gift of salvation.
First, You Must Realize That You Are a Sinner
Every person has sinned. Sin is not simply the mistakes we make; it is our disobedience against a holy God. No matter how good we may try to be, none of us can meet God's perfect standard of righteousness.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 3:23 KJVSin Has a Penalty
Because God is holy and just, sin has a consequence. The Bible tells us that the wages of sin is death. This is more than physical death. Sin separates man from God and brings eternal judgment.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 KJVJesus Christ Paid the Price for Your Sin
God loves you. Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, came into this world and willingly took our place. He died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose again. The price for our salvation was paid by Christ.
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 KJVThe Gospel of Jesus Christ
Salvation is possible because Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again. He did for us what we could never do for ourselves.
“Christ died for our sins according to the
scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose
again the third day according to the scriptures:”
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 KJV
Salvation Cannot Be Earned
Salvation is not earned by being a good person, joining a church, being baptized, giving money, doing good works, or trying to live a better life. Eternal life is the gift of God. A gift is received, not earned.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Ephesians 2:8–9 KJVRepent and Believe the Gospel
Salvation requires a personal response to God. Repentance is a change of mind and heart toward God and sin that turns to Jesus Christ in faith. You must stop trusting in yourself, your religion, or your good works and place your faith in Jesus Christ alone.
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
Mark 1:15 KJVBelieve on the Lord Jesus Christ
Biblical faith is more than simply knowing facts about Jesus. Salvation comes when you personally trust Jesus Christ and what He has done for you. Your confidence for eternal life must be in Christ, not in yourself.
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”
Acts 16:31 KJVYou Can Be Saved Today
If you understand that you are a sinner, believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again, and are willing to turn to Him in repentance and faith, you can call upon Him for salvation.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13 KJV
It Is Christ Who Saves
There are no special words that earn salvation. Repeating a prayer cannot save you. Salvation is found in Jesus Christ. If you are ready to trust Him, simply come to God from your heart, admitting that you are a sinner and asking Him to save you because of what Jesus Christ has done for you.
God Gives Eternal Life
When you place your faith in Jesus Christ, salvation is not something you must continually earn or work to keep. Eternal life is found in God's Son, and the believer can rest in the promise of God's Word.
“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”
1 John 5:11–12 KJVDo Not Put Off Salvation
If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, there is no more important decision you can make. Come to Christ. Trust Him and Him alone for your salvation.
“Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” 2 Corinthians 6:2 KJV
